  • Sulene Rheeder

    Physics Teacher

    Sulene Groenewald (nee Rheeder) is from South Africa, and she is married to Johan Groenewald – an I&S teacher at Ajman Academy. She graduated from the University of South Africa with a Bachelor Degree in Education in 2014 and with a Bachelor degree in Chemistry and Physics in 2017.
    They moved to the UAE in April 2018 when they both joined the AJAC team. Sulene’s teaching motto is a quote from Einstein - “Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is inadequate”. In her classroom students work towards realising what their unique abilities and talents are. They are then challenged to reach their full individual potential. Sulene encourages students to treat each other with respect and kindness and to help each other to succeed. There is also a strong emphasis on commitment, responsibility and hard work in the class.

    Safiya has seven years of experience working in early childhood education. This has been in both a nursery and primary school setting. However, she also has nine years of work experience in many different areas of work such as personal shopping, legal administration and hospitality management.
    Safiya was born in Kuwait to a British mother and Palestinian father but lived and completed her whole schooling life in the North of England.
    Having studied at Leeds Metropolitan University UK, She obtained a BA (Hons) Degree in Business and Tourism. During these four years, Safiya spent one vocational year working in the UAE in a children’s summer camp and it was there she discovered her passion for working with children. Safiya decided to enrol on the CACHE Level three children and young people’s workforce Diploma and became a qualified Early Years Practitioner.
    She believes that every child is a unique individual and has the potential to bring something different to the world. By understanding in them as capable individuals, she helps children to develop their full potential. Safiya is always looking for new ideas on how to continue to support the children in her class contribute to their growth and wellbeing. By attending regular professional development courses run by Ajman Academy and EYES Middle East (Dubai), she believes achieves this.
    In her spare time, Safiya loves to travel the world, spend time with her family, socialise with friends and keep fit by going to the gym and taking part in outdoor activities.

    Rachel was born and raised in Yorkshire, England. After university, she became a teacher in the same area until in 2011 when she left the UK to live and work in the Middle East. During this time she has enjoyed the opportunity to travel to Asia, Europe and South Africa. She is married with one teenage son. She enjoys music, travel and theatre and plays the flute.
    Rachel graduated from Leeds University with a Bachelor of Education honours degree (Primary) in 1992. Much of her 27-year teaching experience has been teaching Grades 1 to 5. In the UK, she led the Junior Department of an Independent School for several years where she also completed NSCL courses for Management. In the UAE, she held positions of Class teacher, Year leader, Phase leader and Pastoral Deputy and PYP coordinator. Her main specialism is English.
    Rachel believes that it is crucial to develop meaningful relationships with students so they feel valued, cared for and listened to. She believes every child has a talent and encourages children to take responsibility for both their learning and their personal development. She understands the importance of helping today’s children become global and responsible citizens of the future. She is always keen to engage children in meaningful learning and create a caring and reflective classroom culture.

    Diego is an experienced educator with a passion for sciences and sports. He grew up in Brazil as a competitive swimmer and a talented hockey player. These activities enhanced social and communication skills. Diego has worked with the IB programme for over six years and has been teaching in the UAE since 2018.
    Diego is a natural inquirer, and this attribute has guided his academic life into the world of sciences. In 2009, he completed his degree in general Biology from the University of “Vale do Paraiba”.
    His primary goal as a teacher is to provide opportunities to engage students in the learning environment as well as to guide learners to approach concepts and skills with autonomy and excitement."

    Nicola was born in Manchester, UK. She graduated from the University of Salford, Manchester with a Bachelor Degree in Sociology with Cultural Studies. She completed her teacher training and NQT years at The RSA Academy, Wolverhampton and came to Ajman Academy in 2013 when the Secondary School first existed. Nicola has to lead the Pastoral Care team to promote student well being and effective routines and procedures in the Secondary school and has recently taken on a whole school initiative to develop our Apple Distinguished status.

    Nicola’s passion is outstanding teaching and learning, to give students the best possible access to the curriculum, through excellent differentiation and innovative ways of using technology. Nicola enjoys crafting lessons and making learning fun to ultimately make progress and raise attainment.
